Culture-sensitive Learning and Teaching in the EFL Classroom ...

posted by J?rgen Kurtz, Justus Liebig University (JLU) Giessen, Germany

In the current age of globalization, migration and digital communication, developing intercultural and/or transcultural communicative competence has become a priority aim in university and school education. Over the past years and decades, ?remarkable progress? has been made in international research in terms of understanding culture and how it is encoded in language. However, looking back at the 6th UCCLLT conference held in San Diego in April this year once again (see my previous post), I feel that official guideline recommendations on ?teaching culture? in the foreign/second language classroom, issued by the American Council of Teaching Foreign Languages (ACTFL 1996), the Council of Europe (2001), the Modern Language Association (2007), and over here in Germany (KMK 2003; the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs) are partially unknown to interested researchers, teachers, and students depending on where they live, work, or study.

Inspired by Claire Kramsch?s brilliant keynote speech delivered a few weeks ago in San Diego, I would like to draw your attention to the important publications mentioned above (linked to this blog on the sidebar to make them more easily accessible). Since culture and language integrated learning in FL/SL classrooms is of interest to reseachers, frontline educators, and univerity students world-wide, I would very much get to know more about the current state of discussion on teaching language and culture in integrated ways in other countries and what teachers actually do to promote culture-sensitive learning in everyday practice around the globe.

St. Louis Online Gaming Company Accused of Fraud ? CBS St. Louis

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. ? Missouri Secretary of State Robin Carnahan announced Thursday a securities fraud action against MVP Network, Inc., and Paul A. Schneider of St. Louis, Mo., concerning the marketing and sales of MVP stock after the company went into receivership.

According to the cease and desist order issued by officials in Carnahan?s Securities Division, Schneider allegedly misrepresented himself and MVP while offering and selling shares of stock in the company. MVP was placed into receivership in April 2010. But in trying to sell MVP stock, Schneider allegedly did not tell investors that MVP was in receivership or that Concord Bank had possession of all MVP assets. He also allegedly failed to mention a September 2010 judgment in excess of $4 million issued against MVP and others.

?Investors deserve to know all the facts about a company when someone is pitching them to buy stock or invest in the company?s future,? Carnahan said. ?For instance, if a company has serious financial or legal troubles, investors need to know that before they purchase stock.?

The order further alleges that Schneider offered and sold over $35,000 in MVP stock to investors after the company was in receivership and all of his interest in MVP stock was assigned to Concord Bank. Schneider allegedly told these investors to wire or send investment funds to a bank account he opened under a company owned by his step-daughter. When contacted by the Missouri Securities Division, the step-daughter allegedly claimed she did not know about the account or authorize Schneider to use the account.

MVP and Schneider face up to $20,000 in penalties and the possibility of paying costs of the investigation and full restitution to the harmed investors. Respondents have 30 days to request a hearing and contest this matter. The Securities Division is cooperating in this matter with other law enforcement agencies.

For more information regarding investments and fraud protection, or for information regarding a company or representative, visit the Missouri Secretary of State?s online Investor Protection Center at www.MissouriInvestorProtection.gov or call the toll-free Investor Protection Hotline at 1-800-721-7996.

(AP) ? A gunman opened fire at a Seattle cafe on Wednesday, killing two people, critically wounding three others and setting off a manhunt that forced officials to close nearby schools.

Police searching for the suspect also had to respond to another fatal shooting near the city's downtown. They say a man killed a woman in an apparent carjacking and fled in a black SUV.

Authorities didn't immediately know whether the shootings were related.

The latest spasm of deadly gun violence to hit the city in recent weeks has worried Seattle's leaders and prompted police to consider increasing patrols in high-crime areas.

Gunfire erupted late Wednesday morning at Cafe Racer, a restaurant and music venue north of the University of Washington. The gunman was described as a man in his 30s wearing dark clothes.

Evan Hill, who lives above the building where the cafe shooting happened, said the cafe was an artists' collective and performance space.

"It's the strangest place to think of a shooting," said Hill, who heard four to five shots. He said he ran to his balcony and called 911, but didn't see a suspect.

Nearby Roosevelt High School has been locked down during the manhunt. Seattle School District spokeswoman Teresa Wippel said students also are locked inside Eckstein Middle School and Greenlake Elementary.

Harborview Medical Center spokeswoman Susan Gregg said all three wounded from the University District shooting are in critical condition.

In the second shooting, the SUV that the gunman fled in was later found, but the suspect remained at large, police said.

In the last month, there have been two random killings in the city.

Last week, a man died when a stray bullet struck him as he and his family drove down a Seattle street. In late April, a woman died of injuries suffered in an apparently random drive-by shooting near downtown.

No arrests have been made in either of those fatalities.

On Saturday, a bystander was wounded near the iconic Space Needle when he was struck by a bullet allegedly fired by a gang member involved in a dispute with another man, authorities said.

In addition to the plan to increase the number of officers on patrol in high-crime areas, police are also urging people with information about shootings to come forward.

Some city leaders were skeptical those approaches would work.

"We have seen many community vigils, community mobilizations. We've heard about these strategies before," said Councilman Tom Rasmussen. "What's going to change?"

Ask the rental agent if outside BBQing is allowed or not. If you enjoy summer BBQs, make sure the apartment complex you choose either has outside BBQs installed or they allow you to use your own. If you buy a property with the intention of building a commercial business on it, check with the city to see what they require as far as zoning with new construction. They might have specific building guidelines which may add significant cost to the construction.

Commercial real estate is a whole different ball game. If you are looking to purchase or sell a piece of property in this category, make sure that you have a professional agent who specializes in this field. Their contacts and knowledge will be essential in the transaction and marketing.

Presentation Tips for Business Pitches and Interviews ...

Strategy Plan One

May 30, 2012?

Whether you are going into a business meeting, interview for job, or to pitch an idea to an investor or financial institution, there are certain tactics that could push your presentation from mediocre to brilliant. ?It?s not necessarily the gadgets, techie presentation tools you bring along to illustrate your points, but rather how you present and what you do in the presentation to convince the crowd. ?Here are some tips to assist in your presentations.

Ensure you are well versed in the subject matter. ?If you are pitching an idea in an industry, know that product, industry and markets inside and out. ?Conducting deep research and digging into as much information prior is going to make you look like you know your stuff? and that will impress the audience

If you are going into an interview, know the information around the position, company, and industry. ?Chances are you will be slammed with knowledge questions in the interview and your presentation of answers should demonstrate your deep knowledge in the subject matter.

Oral presentation can be stressful, and that stress can cause some to ramble on with too much speech, or technical babble that would throw off the audience. ?Going into a meeting well prepared through practicing your presentation, ensure you get your message right down to the exact clear points to the audience. ?Speak with clarity on the topic, illustrating the benefits you want and need to present, that would be relevant to the audience. ?Keep the non-relevant stuff off the discussion. ?As you remember who your audience is, keep the technical or operational specialist information to a minimum if the audience isn?t at that technical level. ?If technical questions are asked, then it opens the door for that detailed discussion.

You will need to exude a high level of confidence in front of the Boards, partners, or employers. ?Confidence is high when you know your stuff, have a great track record, know that your personality is right fit. ?With high confidence you should not?be sheepish in promoting yourself, your strengths and your great ideas. ?External interested parties gravitate to persons with a high level of confidence as that will transfer over to other aspects of business life. ?Once parties are confident in you, they will be confident in your ability to lead projects, lead organizations, achieve goals and company?objectives.

Interviews and business meetings are pressured, stressful situations. ?These parties may use interviews or business presentations as?a tools to see how well you react under pressure. ?Business presentations and interviews can be full of questioning that is trying to draw out behavioral responses from you. ?It is best to stay strong and composed to adequately answer questioning. ?In staying composed in the stressful situations, you are limiting those emotions that may alter or hinder your ability to make decisions or achieve a goal under pressure. ?Parties will take positive notes on your ability to handle high pressured situations with ease.

As you move forward in your discussions and presentations, gauge your audience. How well is it going? ?Don?t be afraid to stop at points and ask the questions, ?Was that point clear?? or ?Is further discussion or detail required on that point??. ?As an astute presenter and speaker you may need to revise your speech, your presentation methods on the fly to get a differing response or to motivate the crowd in another way. ?If you are getting negative responses in one area or topic, switch gears to adapt to discuss the constructive positive points or benefits, or have the ability to discuss the alternate pathways to mitigate those negative points.

Along with having a solid knowledge base and that strong confidence level, you will need to show how well prepared you are for situations, and how well you plan. ?For interviews or business presentations, you need to undertake a high level of preparation in advance. ?Thinking along the lines of business scenarios that may arise. ?Not only must you prepare for the known circumstances, but you must be a pro-active planner around the unknowns or the what-ifs. ?Demonstrating that you solidly analyze scenarios and develop action plans and contingencies will win you big bonus points.

You have to be kidding me.?Cottage Life drops a Canadiana bomb with ?A Happy Makeshift Vision? [.pdf of story], in which famous Canadian poet George Bowering writes about famous Canadian poet Al Purdy and his old A-frame abode in Prince Edward County. The story has the vibe of a Purdy poem. Give it the award.

OK. Wait. What else is in the A&E category?

There?s a high Arctic Canadiana bomb from Canadian Art magazine. In ?Man Standing,? Timothy Taylor profiles Zacharias Kunuk, the director of Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner, The Journals of Knud Rasmussen and Qapirangajuq: Inuit Knowledge and Climate Change. The first section of the story has a few too many overly poetic turns of phrase that draw too much attention to themselves: ?[the airport] hurtles by in a rainbow spray of ice crystals?.the way tongue drifts form in the winter season.? But, Taylor?s tale really shines later with his insights into the director?s films and the cultural psychology of the Inuit?without using wanky phrases, such as ?cultural psychology.?

In The Walrus, Tom Jokinen explores opera from the inside with ?Adventures of a Supernumerary.? The writer gets all immersion journalism as an extra (supernumerary) in a Canadian Opera Company production of Richard Strauss?s Ariadne auf Naxos. Jokinen weaves various themes and images with ease. My favourite line: ?The Finn wears his heart not on his sleeve, but in a Tupperware container in the refrigerator, the better to bear the trials of a working life.?

The Walrus also gives us ?Modern Inconveniences? by Adele Weder. After I read the first line, I decided I didn?t need to read any more.

In his 1908 essay ?Ornament and Crime,? Viennese architect Adolf Loos waxed magnanimous: ?I have made the following discovery and I pass it on to the world: The evolution of culture is synonymous with the removal of ornament from utilitarian objects.?

In Grade 9, in an essay on whether the narrator of Edgar Allan Poe?s ?The Tell-Tale Heart? was insane or not, I opened with ?The Collins English Dictionary defines ?insanity? as??

No one should read that either.

L?actualit? has?a profile of Karine Vanasse, who I?ve only seen in Woody Allen?s Midnight in Paris. (I really should see Polytechnique.)

Not surprisingly, Gerald Hannon wrote a fantastic profile of Kent Monkman, the visual artist known for his gender-bending trickster figure Miss Chief Eagle Testickle, who subverts European/Native power structures and makes Monkman a truck load of dough. Hannon lays down words with the precision of a poet. He could win this category, and I have him picked for his story in the Profiles NMA.

In the modern music department, Brian D. Johnson has a profile of Tony Bennett, ?Steppin? out with Tony,? in Maclean?s; Sarah Liss has a profile of Deadmau5, ?The Man in the Mouse,? in Toronto Life; and No?mi Mercier has a profile of Karkwa, ?Les derni?res fl?ches de Karkwa?? in L?actualit?. Of the three, Mercier?s work is the strongest. Her article about the 2010 Polaris Music Prize?winning group examines a band that is famous, but not famous enough. Also, to riff on the story?s deck, it?s one solitude on an odyssey within the other. Call this one a Hugh MacLennan Canadiana bomb, which might pack more megatons than Cottage Life?s bit of maple ordnance.

Military metaphors aside, my pick for the NMA does not feature Purdy or Karkwa, but a game of chance and a writer who passed away in 2010. Don Gillmor writes about writer Paul Quarringtion and his final months before dying of lung cancer in ?All In? [.pdf of story]. The story, which appeared in Eighteen Bridges, weaves Quarringtion?s story with the games of poker that he, Gillmor and others played. The story is a tightly written elegy and an effort to deal with chance and mortality. It?s the strongest story in the A&E category.

Verizon gets ready to post Galaxy Nexus' Android 4.0.4 update, really really this time

After a horrible tease at the start of the month, Google and Verizon finally appear ready to roll out the Android 4.0.4 update for the LTE Galaxy Nexus. Verizon has just posted the install guide for its elusive IMM76K upgrade, a telltale sign that the update could push out (in this case, from Google) within the next few days. The fixes are largely those that hit the HSPA+ version in March, although that means important Calendar interface tweaks as well as email and device fixes. More than anything, it should close one of the most inexplicably long chapters for minor OS updates in recent memory: Verizon's Galaxy Nexus owners are the last to get 4.0.4, having run on 4.0.2 since December and having exhibited even more patience than Sprint buyers.

Tiny autonomous sensors could lay hidden for years

9 hrs.

Defense research companies are working hard at improving their "unattended ground sensor" technology: tiny, camouflaged devices that can be left alone for months or years to listen for and report events like footsteps and vehicles. The military has been using them for years, but previous versions didn't last nearly as long enough, and weren't effective enough, to justify their cost. The latest models improve on every aspect.

When troops clear an area and move on, they still have to monitor that area for enemy presence. Usually this means sending a patrol -- possibly a single jeep or a few soldiers on foot. These patrols are vulnerable to attack and can't cover every bit of ground. But if troops could drop sensors behind them that would report back every footfall and engine noise, they would know whether they needed to risk sending men out, and get some idea of the location of the threat.

The idea goes back as far as Vietnam, when bulky acoustic sensors were dropped to report back on Viet Cong movements,?but it's only in recent years that the devices have become a contender for mass deployment. Wired has an extended look at the technology with comment from some military and research officials.

The usual advances have contributed to the new models: smaller and faster microchips for detecting and interpreting signals, better batteries and solar cells for keeping those batteries charged, and more intelligent wireless capabilities that let dozens of the sensors share information with each other or their users.

One from Lockheed Martin, pictured, looks just like a rock and can stay active for years -- possibly decades, according to their creator. It listens for footsteps and vehicle noises (the devices can even determine the number of cylinders by certain distinctive measures), puts nearby sensors on alert, and relays the information to the commander.?Another, made by the far smaller Camgian Microsystems, uses a sort of micro-radar to actually watch for movement.

With such a long lifespan, such devices could remain in areas like Afghanistan long after American troops have been withdrawn, providing a basic level of intelligence on movement in areas of interest. Of course, one of?these smart rocks could also be sitting outside a local building or house and no one would be the wiser. In a few years it might be prudent?to check nearby suspicious rocks before whispering?sensitive information.

Summer 2012 Guide to the Immigration Issue

Ok, so maybe it?s not exactly a cheap novel to enjoy under the beach umbrella on a sandy shore, but it is a short ? and hopefully helpful ? primer of the hot issues and updated stats for those following the immigration policy debate this summer.

Two issues presently dominate the debate; state action soon culminating in a Supreme Court decision on Arizona?s SB-1070 and the use (and abuse) of immigration policy by both parties in an election year to influence special interest voters.

The Election

  • The Obama Administration continues extending backdoor amnesty to thousands of deportable aliens, while Congress sits on its hands, despite the overt usurpation of Congressional authority.
  • Former Governor Mitt Romney is wavering on immigration enforcement policy he articulated throughout the primary. Additionally, he has failed to address if and how he might reverse the backdoor amnesty policies underway should he become President.
  • In the battle for the Hispanic vote, both parties consider more concessions for illegal and legal immigrants. Republican Senator Marco Rubio is drafting a GOP DREAM Act hoping to capture Romney?s support while Democrats continue to push amnesty legislation.

The States

  • The Supreme Court decision on Arizona?s SB 1070 enforcement law is expected in late June. The battle for immigration enforcement continues at the state level. Recent efforts to weaken Alabama?s state law failed and other states continue to explore E-Verify and enforcement legislation.
  • The Obama administration is aggressively shutting down state and local enforcement efforts, whether it?s by suing states over new laws or defunding local enforcement programs like 287(g) or weakening Secure Communities.

Congress

  • Senator Marco Rubio wants GOP to support amnesty and increase legal immigration. Rubio appears to have either self-appointed himself the election year ?immigration issue broker? or been assigned the task by the GOP. He is shopping around a GOP version of the DREAM Act but, thus far, has refused to disclose the details of the plan.
  • Republicans and Democrats push visa reforms and additions to unnecessarily increase legal immigration. Rather than tackle the underlying issues with our immigration system or acknowledge that the U.S. already admits over 1 million legal permanent residents a year, leaders in both parties advocate for more visas and looser requirements.
  • Nationwide E-Verify bill is stalled in the House Ways and Means Committee. Along with requiring E-Verify, the bill could pre-empt state enforcement laws.

Number of Illegal Aliens

  • 12 million (FAIR, 2010)
  • 11.2 million (Pew Hispanic Center, 2010)
  • 10.8 million (DHS. FY 2010)

Number of Jobs Presently Held by Illegal Aliens

National Unemployment Rate

  • 8.1% (Bureau of Labor Statistics, April 2012)
  • Over 22 million Americans are unemployed, underemployed or have given up actively looking for work. (BLS, April 2012)

Unskilled Immigrant Admissions

  • Nearly 1 million (Department of Homeland Security, FY 2011)

Annual National Cost of Illegal Immigration

  • $113 billion
  • The bulk of the costs ? $84 billion ? are absorbed by state and local governments

Pending Enforcement Legislation

  • Several attempts to close loophole that allows illegal aliens to receive the Additional Child Tax Credit. The latest House version was added to the House passed budget. Two bills have been introduced in the Senate.
  • The House adopted an amendment to the FY 2013 spending bill for the Departments of Commerce, Justice, and Science (CJS), that defunds the Obama Administration?s lawsuits against several states that seek to strike down their immigration enforcement laws.
  • The House adopted another amendment to the CJS appropriations bill that strips certain federal funding from sanctuary cities.

Pending Amnesty Legislation

  • DREAM Act ? Versions introduced in both House and Senate (H.R. 1842, S. 952) in 2011. Introduced in every session since 2001 and often lumped into other amnesty bills. Last failed in Senate in December 2010.
  • Comprehensive Immigration Reform (S. 1258) ? mass amnesty, introduced nearly every session. No vote on it yet during this session.
  • Adjusted Residency for Military Service (ARMS) Act (H.R. 3823) ? Introduced by Rep. David Rivera (R-FL) in January. It is essentially only the military component of the DREAM act. Forthcoming?: GOP DREAM Act from Senator Marco Rubio.

States to Watch

  • Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina and Utah ? the Supreme Court decision in Arizona SB 1070 will affect active DOJ lawsuits against these states.
  • California ? considering tax plan and guest worker program for illegal aliens.
  • Illinois, Massachusetts, New York ? Governors of these states refuse to cooperate with Secure Communities. DHS is set for full compliance in 2013. Will these states hold out?
  • Mississippi ? the House passed an immigration enforcement bill in March, will they take it up again next session?
  • New Mexico ? the battle over driver?s licenses for illegal aliens continues. If they repeal, Washington will be the only state that gives driver?s licenses to illegal aliens.
  • Oregon ? Governor supports allowing illegal aliens to use Matricula Consular ID in place of driver?s license.

In-State Tuition for Illegal Aliens

  • Total of 13 states have passed in-state tuition for illegal aliens
  • Maryland passed in-state tuition for illegal aliens in 2011, however activists led a successful petition drive and the law will be put to referendum in November 2012.
  • Wisconsin repealed in-state tuition for illegal aliens in 2011.

Miles of Fence Constructed

  • 649 miles out of the 1,954 mile-long southern border is secured by fence
  • 299 miles of vehicle barriers
  • 350 miles of pedestrian fencing

4 Questions Not To Ask A Single Mom

www.circleofmoms.com:

Just the other day when I was meeting a friend for coffee after a Saturday morning run, I was reminded once again that I am a single mom ? or at least of the image I must wear on my sleeve that propels inquiring minds to ask outrageously insensitive questions.

Dallas crane standoff ends as man falls to ground

Tim Sharp / Reuters

Police cruisers block an intersection leading to the scene of the construction crane standoff in Dallas, Texas, Monday.

By NBCDFW.com

DALLAS -- The standoff between Dallas police and a man that climbed to the top of a construction crane on the campus of Southern Methodist University ended early Tuesday morning, when the man fell to his death.

At about 1 a.m. Dallas police used bright lights, loud directional sirens and the police helicopter to distract the man, while four SWAT?officers climbed the crane to storm the cab believed to be 100 to 150 feet above the ground.

Police say the man sprayed a WD-40-like substance at officers as they entered the cab. He then climbed out the smashed windshield of the cab.

"He retreated to a position in the crane where he had one leg in a window and one leg outside the window, from there he went over the edge, and clung to the edge for a moment before he fell to his death," said Dallas Deputy Chief Randy Blankenbaker.

The man fell just before 2 a.m. Tuesday morning, ending a roughly 14-hour standoff.

"We at SMU are relieved this situation has been resolved and the campus is secure. We all regret the loss of life," said SMU?spokesman Brad Cheves.

Throughout the day, the suspect dropped items from the crane cab, including his shirt and shoes, some cans, a fire extinguisher, and other items that may have been inside the cab.

A robbery suspect sits in the cab of a construction crane on the SMU campus, Monday.

Sources tell NBC?5 the man may have become ill during the standoff and vomited, perhaps due to the heat.

As night fell, Dallas police used a spotlight to shine light into the crane. Police also used noise machines to keep the man awake and talking.

Man Is Suspect in Armed Robbery
Police did confirmed Tuesday the man is the suspect connected to an overnight robbery about 2:30 a.m. Monday and that police dogs tracked the man's scent to the construction site.

David Cantu said he was putting sound and lighting equipment into the truck outside the Adolphus Hotel when a man jumped in and tried to stab him with something sharp, possibly a nail.

"I said, What are you doing?'" Cantu said. "He swung his arm at me with a sharp object and for the most part, I just backed off and let him do his thing."

Cantu said the man sped away, hitting several cars parked along Main Street.

"You hear a big bang multiple times,"?he said. "He's hitting multiple cars at that point."

The stolen?truck was later found not far from the crane, according to police.

Chris Ghanbari, a freelance photographer who lives in a building overlooking the scene, got out his video camera and started rolling.

"I just started shooting a minute -- a minute-and-a-half -- of video of the crime scene," Ghanbari said. "About 30 minutes later, we had 10 to 15 police cars out there."

Assess Your Serious Relationship Readiness | BettyAnn Daily

Have you ever stopped and thought, Im just not ready for a serious relationship! Some people are thoughtless and try to avoid meaningful or heartfelt discussion by taking the easy road (by saying they are not ready for a serious relationship). Some of these folks may even end up in a relationship with another person soon after they end it with you. What this really means is they didnt want a serious relationship with you.

When people meet others they are interested in, its human nature to desire them, to want to spend time with them, and to hope for exclusivity. People MAKE TIME for the things that are important and matter to them. They make the other person a priority and focus in their life. They drop all of the excuses and focus on nurturing the relationship. They also crave trust and respect in the relationship. If someone is constantly making excuses for the reasons why they cant spend time with you, the chances are, youre just not that important to them.
Dont waste your time and energy focusing on someone who constantly gives you the run-around and makes excuses for their ill-behavior. Chances are, they crave their freedom, but want their cookies too. Refuse to be their pawn and to be there for their whims! Its no fun to sit around and only be wanted when its convenient for them.

Some people insulate themselves because they are not ready for a serious relationship. They may do this by entering into relationships with unavailable people, by choosing the wrong people, or by sabotaging their relationships. There are many reasons why someone may not be ready for a relationship. These reasons may include but not be limited to the experience of a past trauma they have not effectively dealt with, immaturity, lack of desire, trust issues, etc
To assess your serious relationship readiness, it may be helpful to answer a few questions.

Would be ready to care for your partner for life if they were permanently disabled or ill?

Are you ready to be honest with your partner about everything at all times?

Are you ready to discontinue ties to your former romantic partners?

Are you ready to include someone in EVERY aspect of your life?

Are you ready to at times, put someones needs ahead of your own?

While there is no right or wrong to these questions, they should be used as a tool to inspire thought when assessing your serious relationship readiness.

We are back from California, and very sad about it! Our trip was amaaaaaaaaazing.? We flew out on Wednesday night and came back last night? so it wasn?t very long, but we had so much fun!? We got to see all sorts of family and friends, went to the beach many times, did some touristy sight-seeing stuff, got good food (!), and yes- had our baby shower! The whole time we were surrounded by various family and friends and it was good (for me) to be around so many old familiar faces.? My mom kept rubbing my belly all week long sayign ?hi baby!? or ?how?s baby doing?!? all excitedly? it was weird to be constantly touched but we think she?s just a little bit excited about this new grandchild she?s getting. :)

The baby shower was completely amazing and totally deserves its own paragraph.? My mom hosted it for us at her house and all the little decorations and such were so cute!? She really put a lot of work into the shower- we felt very loved.? Lots of family and friends showed up and we played silly games like diaper change relay race and had each person make a scrapbook page for the baby that we can add photos to later.? We also went ahead and told everyone the name, since I had slipped so many times already that my mom already knew it!? Everyone except my dad liked the name, but he?s hard to please anyways. :) ? We got a toooonnnnn of gifts, most of which were clothes? We are officially done buying this baby any clothes in sizes 0-6 months, maybe even on up to 9 months! LOL.? We also got a bunch of gift cards to the stores we?re registered at, which will come in helpful, and a few homemade blankets/quilts for the baby that made me tear up when I saw them.? They were just so lovely and so much time and love were put into them by their creators!? Sniff, sniff.? Anyways, the biggest gift we got was the gift of our stroller, given to us by my grandma and aunt. That was unexpected and very very nice of them!? With that out of the way, the only big things we have left to get are our pack n play and my breast pump (which is where those gift cards will come in handy).? So overall our family and friends were very generous and I feel very lucky to have them!

And now, what I?m sure you?re all waiting for? pictures! =)

Greek tragedy: Economic crisis sparks brain drain

"Things are getting worse and worse in Greece. There is no future for the next few years there," says Christos Christoglou, a Greek inspection engineer who moved to Germany to find work.

By Andy Eckardt and Carlo Angerer, NBC News

MAINZ, Germany ??Thousands of well-educated workers are fleeing Greece as the eurozone crisis batters their homeland.

Germany, Europe's economic powerhouse and?a country which has been criticized by many Greeks over its harsh demands for austerity cuts in return for bailout cash, has experienced an influx of young skilled immigrants.

Der Spiegel magazine noted that while Greek newspapers "printed cartoons depicting the Germans as Nazis, concentration camp guards and eurozone imperialists who allow their debtors to bleed to death," the Greeks have kept arriving ??bringing an "anything is better than Athens" attitude with them.

With more than 50 percent of young Greeks out of work, it's not surprising that official statistics show?the number of Greeks who moved to Germany increased 90 percent during 2011.?

Unemployment rates have consistently been shrinking in Germany in recent years and the economy is thriving despite Europe's ongoing financial crisis. Relaxed cross-border employment regulations for member states of the European Union also make Germany an attractive choice for job seekers.?And while Germany is in need of specialized workers, the Greek labor market has little to offer.

Leftist tipped to be next Greek leader warns of 'Cold War' over cuts

"It is virtually impossible to find a job in Greece at the moment,"?says Christos Christoglou, an inspection engineer who took a job at?German chemical and pharmaceutical giant Bayer?at the start of the financial crisis in June 2010. "It is not that there are only very few jobs for young graduates to seek, no, there are none, zero, there is nothing."

A year after moving to Germany, Christoglou's wife Mary and their 5-year old daughter Georgina joined him last summer. The family now lives in a four-bedroom apartment in Leverkusen. They are likely to stay for good.

"My wife, an English teacher, and our daughter, do not speak German yet. But my Mary will soon also try to find a job," Christoglou told NBC News.?"And while, yes, it is quite difficult to be without our close friends and family in Greece, I do not want to waste my six years of intensive studies to find myself without hope for the future."

Christoglou, 38,?says incentives are needed to prevent Greece's well-educated workforce from abandoning the country.

"I know many Greek academics, but also ordinary workers, who have moved to wealthier European countries, like France, the Netherlands or Sweden," he added.

Greek debt woes put Europe on financial knife edge

According to Germany's national statistics office, some 24,000 people left Greece last year to live and work in Germany, almost double the number who did so in 2010. However, Der Spiegel quoted?Hamburg-based immigration expert Vassilis Tsianos as pointing out that those figures did not include people who had not registered with German authorities. Tsianos told the magazine he estimates that 60,000 new Greek immigrants arrived in Germany in 2011.

There was also a significant spike in the number of immigrants relocating to Germany from other economically depressed southern European countries last year, with official statistics showing an increase of 52 percent from Spain, 28 percent from Portugal and 23 percent from Italy.

So much for 'the Spanish dream': Euro crisis turns suburbs into ghost towns

Until a few weeks ago very few people had heard of him, but Alexis Tsipras could soon be the next Prime Minister of Greece. His anti-austerity stance won his party second place in the recent election, and the forecasts for next month's run-off suggest they could do even better.

The recent arrivals include 27-year-old IT specialist Vasileia Paschali, who decided to bid farewell to Greece's political and economic turmoil and?arrived in the quaint southern German city of Boeblingen nine months ago. She didn't speak a word of German.

"The most difficult thing was learning German, it was terrifying at the beginning,"?Paschali told NBC News.?"Life is so quiet and structured here in Boeblingen, which is quite a contrast to the hectic routine I experienced in Athens."

She responded to a job offer from German engineering development supplier Ruecker, a company which mainly services the automobile and aviation sectors.

Europe told to prep for Greek exit scenario

Wiesbaden-based?Ruecker is?actively recruiting technical engineers?from Greece, Portugal, Spain and Italy, offering them a two-month paid language course followed by an open-ended contract with a guaranteed base salary of about $4,500 per month.

"There are simply not enough qualified applicants on the German market," says Thomas Aukamm, who works for Ruecker's marketing and recruiting department.?"These are investments that we need to make in order to secure the workforce that we work with in the future."

The company has received about 3,500 applications, mainly from southern European countries, and is presently evaluating about 500 of them.

"Even if we could only fill 10 percent of the open positions, we would be very happy," Aukamm added.

Many residents fear that a slow economy is cutting into the number of foreign visitors. NBC's Stephanie Gosk reports.

'Leaving everything behind'
For Paschali, whose parents, 28-year-old brother and other close family members remain in Greece, the move to Germany was not an easy choice.

Paschali already had a job at a local company in Athens, but she was forced to accept a 20 percent pay cut due to the financial crisis.

"Leaving everything behind with an uncertain future was difficult, of course, but I was seeking stability and believe that I can find it here in Germany," says Paschali, who is originally from the rural town of Trikala.

Greeks withdraw $894 million in one day

Greece's national unemployment rate presently stands at nearly 22 percent overall ??German tabloid BILD has depicted Greeks as "lazy" ??and widespread protests against the government's austerity measures continue. However, an estimated 70,000 engineering positions remain unfilled at the moment in Germany.

University graduate Anna Sioki moved to Germany from Greece two years ago. "I was one of the lucky ones because I left at the beginning of the crisis," she says.

"Germany's skilled labor shortage could have severe economic consequences," said Dr. Ina Kayser of the?the German Association of Engineers (VDI). "We estimate that the labor market could face economic losses of up to 7 billion euros, or nearly $10 billion, as a result of, for example, production delays or necessary relocation of production abroad."

Other German business sectors are also starting to look abroad.

'Vicious circle': Europe crisis threatens world economy, OECD says

Hospitals and private medical practices are also in need of highly trained personnel, especially in Germany's rural areas, where many workers have migrated to cities.

Karl Horn, staff manager at the Rheinhessen Clinic in Alzey, says that health care executives are increasingly looking at the southern European labor market.

"We've already sent out tweets in Spanish to advertise openings at our clinic," Horn said.?

Why so glum? Germans struggle to find joy, poll suggests

Despite a degree in applied foreign languages,?Anna Sioki was only able to find work at a book store in Thessaloniki after finishing her studies in 2009. She decided to come to Germany two years ago.

A new election is scheduled for June 17, as debate continues over the country's place in the euro zone. NBC's Stephanie Gosk reports.

"I was one of the lucky ones because I left at the beginning of the crisis," the 27-year-old told NBC News.

Her parents were not as fortunate. Sioki's father, an electrician, had to close his shop due to a lack of business and has been unemployed for nearly two years. Her parents now live on a small pension that her mother receives.

"It is pretty bad that all the specialists are going abroad," Sioki self-critically remarked.?"How is Greece supposed to make progress that way? But, I see no other solution for myself and the other young Greeks."
