Hundreds evacuated as western wildfires grow

LOVELAND, Colo. (AP) ? Firefighters on Sunday were fighting wildfires that have spread quickly in parched forests in Colorado and New Mexico, forcing hundreds of people from their homes and the evacuation of wolves from a sanctuary.

The Colorado fire, burning in a mountainous area about 15 miles west of Fort Collins, grew to 22 square miles within about a day of being reported and has destroyed or damaged 18 structures. A fire near the mountain community of Ruidoso in southern New Mexico began Friday and was listed at 40 square miles Sunday due to better mapping. It has destroyed at least 20 structures.

It wasn't immediately clear how many of the structures lost were homes, as opposed to outbuildings.

In Colorado, the fire is sending up heavy smoke, obscuring the sun and creating an eerie, orange dusk in the middle of the day. Some ash fell as authorities issued a briefing on the fire. The smell of smoke drifted into the Denver area and smoke from the fires spread as far away as parts of central Nebraska, western Kansas and Texas.

The latest New Mexico fire is smaller than the Whitewater-Baldy fire ? the largest in the state's history ? but it's more concerning to authorities because it started closer to homes, said Dan Ware, a spokesman for the New Mexico State Forestry Division. He said the number of Ruidoso evacuees was in the hundreds, but he didn't have an exact figure.

Firefighters also were battling a wildfire that blackened 6 square miles in Wyoming's Guernsey State Park and forced the evacuation of campers and visitors.

Cooler weather was helping firefighters in their battle Sunday against two other wildfires in southern Utah.

In Colorado, authorities sent 1,600 evacuation notices to phone numbers but it wasn't immediately clear how many residents had to leave. About 500 people had checked in at Red Cross shelters.

Law officers went door to door to alert people in the evacuation area on Saturday, with flames licking at some of those units, Larimer County sheriff Justin Smith said. He said there was an unconfirmed report of a person unaccounted for, but he wouldn't elaborate.

Authorities say it's the worst fire seen in the county in about 25 years. It spread as fast as 1 1/2 miles an hour Saturday, skipping and jumping over some areas but burning intensely in trees in others. Flames were coming dangerously close to deputies who were telling some residents to evacuate, Sheriff Justin Smith said.

Because of the erratic way the fire has burned, unburned structures within the fire perimeter remain at risk.

Kathie Walter and her husband helped friends several miles away evacuate from the Colorado fire on Saturday. When they got home, they were surprised to get a call warning them to be ready to evacuate just in case. But Walter didn't want to wait.

"Smoke was coming in hard. We could not see flames or orange or black smoke. But we didn't need see anymore. We just said 'Hey, let's get out of here,'" she said.

They evacuated with their five cats and two dogs. They had a head start. After a wildfire in the area last year, they had left two suitcases packed in their garage.

Elaine Mantle and her family got a call to evacuate their Bellvue home at 5:45 a.m. Sunday. It took about 30 minutes for them to get out and reach a spillover shelter at the Budweiser Event Center in Loveland. Evacuees gathered there for a fire briefing, sipping coffee and eating bananas and powdered doughnuts, in a large gymnasium-like space.

It was the Mantles' first evacuation in the 25 years that they have lived in the mountains, and they were grateful to be safe.

"We're all here, we're all OK. Our neighbors are all here. We feel good," Mantle said.

She, her husband and adult daughter checked for fire information updates on their phones as they waited for the briefing to begin.

The evacuees included 11 wolves from a sanctuary near the fire. KUSA-TV in Denver reported that 19 wolves remained behind at the sanctuary, which has underground concrete bunkers known as "fire dens" that can be used by the animals.

The blaze is the latest to hit Colorado's drought-stricken Front Range. In May, a fire set by a camper's stove charred 12 square miles in the same Poudre Canyon area. In March, the Lower North Fork Fire 25 miles southwest of Denver killed three people and damaged or destroyed more than two dozen homes. That fire was triggered by a prescribed burn by the state forest service that grew out of control.

Eight air tankers ? including two from Canada ? and several helicopters were on the scene to help fight the blaze, which appeared to be burning on private and U.S. Forest Service land and was expected to be fueled by wind gusts of up 40 mph Sunday.

Wind has played a major role in the spread of both of the fires.

In New Mexico, the mix of timber, dry grass and the steepness of the slopes were making the firefighting efforts more difficult.

The fire was burning in steep, rocky, inaccessible terrain in the White Mountain Wilderness of the Lincoln National Forest, which is home to Smokey Bear, the little black cub that became the nation's symbol of fire prevention in the 1940s.

More than 300 firefighters were battling the blaze help from three large air tankers, three heavy helicopters and three Blackhawk helicopters. There were also 100 National Guard troops in Ruidoso to help as needed.

Craig E. Rubens, MD, PhD: Healthy Birth Critical to Child Survival

2012-06-08-567image001copy.jpg

2012-06-09-craig.jpg
Any day now, I will become a first-time grandfather. I'm excited to meet the new addition to our family and have already let my imagination wander, envisioning what the little guy will be like and what kind of life he will lead. Will he have a passion for teaching, like my wife, or perhaps discover he finds joy in helping children and become a pediatric researcher, as I did? I let myself entertain these dreams because I know they are possible. While pregnancy complications, such as preterm birth and stillbirth could happen -- even in the United States -- having access to world-class health care will give him the best chance to survive and thrive. But around the world, millions of children are not so fortunate.

Tremendous reductions have been made in global child mortality, but with seven million children dying every year before their fifth birthday, our fight is far from over. As a global community, we must prioritize child survival and child health, and commit additional resources to ending preventable child deaths.

Rapid advances in technology mean rapid improvements in the delivery of care in the developed world. While these improvements reach the developing world more slowly, they will fulfill a tremendous opportunity to impact child survival and help more children grow up healthy. The organization I lead, the Global Alliance to Prevent Prematurity and Stillbirth (GAPPS), an initiative of Seattle Children's, has partnered with Every Child Deserves a 5th Birthday, as well as with organizations like the Frontline Health Workers Coalition, to promote increased investment and strategy in these life-saving interventions.

However, caring for newborns and young children is only half the battle. Safer and healthier pregnancies will put every child in a better position to live a long and healthy life. That's why in addition to increasing the delivery of new healthcare technologies, it is equally important that we study what happens during pregnancy.

The Born Too Soon report released in May showed that 15 million babies are born prematurely every year, and more than one million of those babies die in infancy. Worldwide, premature birth has become the second leading cause of death for children under age 5. It is imperative that we discover new causes of preterm birth, stillbirth, and other adverse pregnancy outcomes, and develop new ways to prevent them.

One way we are doing this is through the GAPPS Repository, a resource of pregnancy specimens and data that is enabling groundbreaking research into what happens in the womb. The GAPPS Repository provides a foundation for the development of low-cost interventions that can be used around the world to help ensure healthy pregnancies.

As I focus on these global issues, having a daughter nine months pregnant has brought my attention closer to home. Lately I have found myself checking my iPhone repeatedly, knowing I may get the call at any minute that it is time to head to the hospital. I am lucky that I view the birth of my grandson as an occasion for joy, and have confidence that he will live a long and healthy life. I want every parent, every grandparent, to have that same confidence. Let's commit to helping every child reach his or her fifth birthday. Let's commit to making every birth a healthy birth.

Convened by the Governments of United States, Ethiopia and India, and organized in close collaboration with UNICEF, the Child Survival Call to Action will be held on June 14-15 in Washington, DC. Focused on ending preventable child death through the survival of newborns, children and mothers, the Call to Action will convene 700 prominent leaders from government, the private sector, faith-based organizations and civil society to kick off a long-term, focused effort to save children's lives. 'AGT' judge doesn't think Poe will be kicked off

NBC

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper

In less than a week, "America's Got Talent" singer Timothy Michael Poe has gone from two standing ovations and?national acclaim to daily headlines about discrepancies in his military record. The Minnesota National Guard says it has no record of the injury he claims, his own squad leader has called him a liar, a photo he claimed was himself has been revealed to be another soldier, and even his stutter has been questioned.

But despite all that, "America's Got Talent" judge Howie Mandel told TMZ.com that he doesn't think Poe will be disqualified from the NBC show, and will be allowed to continue performing.

"I was blown away that I was totally taken in," Mandel told TMZ. "I'm really angry with the guy."

"AGT" judge Howard Stern spoke out against Poe on his radio show early in the week, but on Wednesday, tweeted, "Waiting to get the facts. If true I'm disgusted."

Mandel may think Poe will continue, but?unnamed show sources tell TMZ that producers are considering editing Poe out of the upcoming Las Vegas show.

(TODAY.com is powered by msnbc.com, which is a joint venture between Microsoft and NBC Universal.)

On the show, Poe said he was injured in a grenade blast in Afghanistan, breaking his back and acquiring a stutter. He later told the You Served military-themed podcast?that he actually broke his back before ever serving in Afghanistan and rebroke it at some time, but isn't sure if it was at the time of the blast.

WFAA-TV in Dallas interviewed Poe?before his "AGT"?episode ever aired, and he told them at the time that he served in Iraq as well as Afghanistan and said he was shot in a leg during an attack in Iraq in 2005.

But the Minnesota National Guard, whose spokesman?said earlier that it had no record of Poe being injured by a grenade in Afghanistan, spoke out again Thursday and said it had no record of Poe ever serving or being injured in Iraq.

Lt. Col Kevin Olson said Poe was injured in Indiana before deploying for Afghanistan, where he served for a month before being medically evacuated to Germany. The Guard records also show Poe training for Iraq, but never being sent there due to a medical issue, Olson said.

Poe's fiancee, Carrie Morris, who appeared on the show with him, called in to the Texas-based Joe Pagliarulo radio show to defend Poe.

She told Pagliarulo that Poe mistakenly submitted a photo of Staff Sgt. Norman Bone instead of himself because "(show producers) were rushing him for pictures," and said "I do not know how the (photo of Bone) got on our desktop," mentioning that two children and her elderly father use the same computer and may have downloaded it.

Morris has also released some of Poe's medical records to media outlets. However, as?military vets and active-duty soldiers at the This Ain't Hell blog point out, the only?mention of?a grenade blast in those records comes from Poe himself, not from other witnesses or military personnel.

Do you agree with Howie Mandel that Timothy Poe won't be kicked off? Tell us on Facebook.

(AP) ? LeBron James has walked off the court here too many times with nowhere to go except summer vacation.

The destination this time: Game 7 in Miami, with a spot in the NBA finals on the line.

James had 45 points and 15 rebounds, overwhelming the Boston Celtics and leading the Heat to a 98-79 victory Thursday night that forced a decisive game in the Eastern Conference finals.

After two days of questions about the Heat's future and his own history, James provided his response in resounding fashion in a building where Miami had lost 15 of its previous 16 games, and where his season had twice come to an end.

"In an environment like this, you want to have a big game," he said. "I wanted to be there for my teammates, no matter what was going on throughout the course of the game.

"This was a gut check for us, and it's good to see we were able to bounce back after that loss, after that Game 5 loss at home."

James shot 19 of 26 from the field and finished four points shy of his playoff career-high while playing 45 minutes, not sitting down until the victory was long secured.

"He was absolutely fearless tonight, and it was contagious," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "The way he approached the last 48 hours, and not only LeBron, but everybody else. Nobody likes getting dirt thrown on your face before you're even dead. He showed great resolve."

Dwyane Wade added 17 points for the Heat, who need a victory at home Saturday night to return to the NBA finals. And if James plays like this again, Miami should have no problem getting it.

"He played amazing. He was locked in from the beginning of the game like I've never seen him before," Wade said.

Rajon Rondo had 21 points and 10 assists for Boston. Kevin Garnett and Brandon Bass each scored 12 points, but Paul Pierce had only nine on 4-of-18 shooting.

"That was tough," Pierce said. "You got an opportunity to close out a series on your home floor. For us to come out and play the way we did, it was very tough. You got to take your hats off to them. They had a really great game plan. LeBron really got hot, played like the MVP tonight."

In the site of some of James' biggest disappointments, the only disappointed ones Thursday were the thousands of fans who hoped to see a celebration but instead filed out of the TD Garden midway through the fourth quarter, just before the league MVP called it a night.

"He was comfortable all night," Rondo said. "We didn't get into his air space."

Miami barely won Game 2 before dropping the next three games, but this one was never in doubt. James was a one-man force on what's supposed to be a Big Three, carrying the Heat in the first half while Wade made only 1 of 6 shots.

The Celtics were hoping to complete a comeback from a 2-0 deficit, as Oklahoma City did in the Western Conference, and advance to face the Thunder in the NBA finals. But they missed 13 of 14 3-point attempts and will have to win a second straight game in Miami to play for the title.

James' season was twice ended in Boston while playing for Cleveland, the Celtics emerging as the winner in a Pierce-James duel in Game 7 of the 2008 East semifinals, then beating the Cavs in Game 6 of the second round two years later.

That was James' last game with Cleveland, leaving that summer for Miami and the All-Star help that Wade and Chris Bosh could provide.

He needed none of it Thursday.

He had 30 points by halftime and spent the night silencing the Celtics crowd and perhaps some of the doubters he somehow still has. He set the tone for the game by making 6 of 7 shots and scoring 14 points in the first quarter, and he made sure the Heat were never challenged from there.

"I hope now you guys can stop talking about LeBron and he doesn't play in big games," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said. "He was pretty good tonight. So we can put that to bed and go play Game 7."

Meanwhile, Pierce, whose 3-pointer over James was the biggest basket of Boston's Game 5 victory, missed 13 of 16 shots through three quarters, including all six 3-point attempts.

The Heat obviously weren't deflated by that loss and came to fight, scoring 10 straight points to build a 10-point lead shortly after Mario Chalmers was called for a technical foul after getting mixed up with Ray Allen. They extended it to 12 points later in the period, taking a 26-16 lead into the second after shooting 58 percent in the period.

Wade finally got on the board with a jumper to open the second, but he seemed strangely passive even with Miami trying to save its season.

No matter. James didn't need the help.

He had consecutive baskets for a 15-point lead and came up with a basket every time the Celtics tried to get any rhythm. He soared high above the rim ? and any other player ? for a follow dunk after the Celtics had crept within eight in the final 2 minutes of the half. Miami led 55-42 at the break.

James made 12 of his first 13 shots before missing from the perimeter on his final attempt of the half.

Only Rondo kept it from being a blowout, scoring 19 points and adding five assists in the half. Relishing the challenge, he even emulated Garnett by doing a couple of knuckle pushups after being knocked to the court while drawing a foul, but he couldn't keep up with James and needed some help that never arrived.

The Celtics, trying desperately for one last championship before the expected breakup of their Big Three, hope this one doesn't get added to recent series losses against Orlando in 2009 and the Lakers in the NBA finals in 2010, when they lost Game 6s with chances to win series and then fell in Game 7.

James' first basket of the third quarter increased the lead to 17 points, and from there it was just a matter of coming up with another score any time the Celtics tried to make a run.

Boston never came close, and when a 3-pointer by Shane Battier made it 81-63 with 10:19 to play, Rivers spent part of a timeout standing alone on the court with his arms folded, leaving it to the players to try to come up with an answer that wasn't there.

Bosh entered with 5 ? minutes left in the first quarter of his second game back after missing nine with a lower abdominal strain, finishing with seven points and six rebounds.

Notes: James is the first player to score at least 25 points against the Celtics in eight consecutive postseason games since Kareem Abdul-Jabbar from April 28, 1974, to May 27, 1984. ...The NBA playoff record for points in a half is 39, set by Golden State's Eric "Sleepy" Floyd on May 10, 1987, against the Lakers. Floyd finished with 51 points. ... The Heat switched to their red road jerseys after losing in the black here earlier in the series.

On Meeting Friends Halfway | Psychology Today

QUESTION?

Hi, Irene.

I suffer from mental health difficulties and I had to quit my job and move back to my parents' house. My GP referred me to a group for women with similar problems and there I met and became close to another member of the group.

My friend is a lovely person and I really welcomed her friendship. However, over the past few months, she's become more exclusive and 'clingy.'?Because my friend is married and has two young children, I didn't expect the friendship to become quite so intense (although I enjoy company, I also need my own space.) My friend frequently wants to visit me at my parents' house or for me to go to her house.

My friend's house is a half hour drive away and neither of us can drive (I also struggle to use public transport at the moment, due to anxiety and panic attacks.) Consequently, we end up relying on my dad or her husband for transport.?

Although I really like her husband and find her kids lovely, it is difficult and stressful to cope with spending a lot of time with anyone's lively and demanding children. I've explained this to my friend and her husband has said that, before the birth of his own kids, he felt the same way.

My friend keeps inviting me to stay for the evening meal, even when I explain that it isn't particularly convenient or that I don't feel up to it. If I visit her in the afternoon, she'll push me to stay later and if I'm at home, she'll ring me and try to persuade me to come over. Even though I've explained my issues and some of the details of my anxiety disorder, she'll ask me if she/ her husband/ kids have annoyed/ offended me. Similarly, if I say I'm feeling a bit low and don't feel like talking, she'll keep ringing and try to push me into talking about what's bothering me.?

Because of my friend's own issues, she becomes anxious that I don't like her anymore, if I express my need for a bit more space.?I want to be a supportive friend and I try to understand how her illness affects her. I realize that some of her behavior is due to her own illnesses but I feel I can't give as much as she is asking. I also have limited energy and, while I know she's trying to help, I feel I need the space to be able to see other friends and to pursue my own interests. Even my boyfriend understands this and does not try to crowd me.

I don't want to hurt her or lose her friendship but the constant demands on my time and attention and her inability to accept my limitations is causing me a lot of stress. How do I explain this without hurting her feelings or damaging the friendship?

Thanks for your time and I apologize for the long post!?

Best, Charlene

?

ANSWER?

Hi Charlene,?

It sounds like you have a good sense of yourself and your needs. While you like this friend and her family, she seems insensitive to your needs and feelings. As you suggest, she may have her ?own issues? that don?t allow her to be more responsive to someone else.?

I don?t think you want to end this friendship but it?s clear you need to be more assertive in expressing your needs and setting limits, or else you will grow more and more resentful.?

A couple of suggestions:?

  • You could unilaterally decide to see your friend less frequently, freeing up more time for yourself and for other friends. Explain to her that it?s about you, not about her. If she is unable to understand or accept this, you may simply need to learn to say ?no? to her.?
  • You could both meet halfway between your homes, at some public place, perhaps a restaurant, where you wouldn?t have to deal with the pressure of young children. If her husband is willing to babysit, it might give your friend a needed respite too. Because the get-together would have a more natural end and pick-up time, it wouldn?t drag on to the point where you feel exhausted.

Simply ?telling? your friend you?re feeling uncomfortable doesn?t seem to be enough; you have to follow up with concrete actions as well---and not continue in a way that suggests it?s business is as usual. You can be kind but firm.?

Your first responsibility is to yourself. If your friend isn?t willing to make any concessions and meet you halfway, literally and figuratively, you may have to back away from the friendship.?

Hope this helps.

Warm regards, Irene
