Preparing for Fall Dances should not increase the risk of skin cancer ...

Using tanning beds can increase the risk of contracting the most deadly, of 75 %. Nearly 28 million people tan in the United States each year. Back to school means new classes, clothing and times, including a full calendar of social events. Unfortunately, many young adults, especially young women, their heads into the tanning salon in preparation for college and high school dances in the fall. Despite repeated warnings about the dangers of indoor tanning and the fact that there is no such thing as a healthy tan, many women feel the pressure of peers and society to the fire, thus putting their health at risk.

Department of Health and Human Services and the International Agency for Research on Cancer said panel UV rays of the sun and artificial light sources such as tanning beds and sun lamps as a known carcinogen. Indoor tanning equipment, which includes all sources of artificial light, emits UVA and UVB rays.

Sunless tanning lotions and sprays contain dihydroxyacetone, or DHA, which interacts with skin proteins to produce a tan that gradually fades. Recent technological advances have led to formulations that are more sustainable and realistic results, in contrast to the orange-ish hue of previous generations of self-tanners.

Martin. ?UVA rays cause damage deep in the skin and are linked to melanoma. Therefore, the self-tanning lotions or sprays on the bronze is the only sure way to get a tanned look.?

?It ?important to remember though that the color produced by a self-tanner does not provide adequate sun protection for your skin, so be sure to continue to apply sunscreen generously water resistant with an SPF of at least 30 that provides a broad spectrum protection against UVA and UVB rays to all exposed skin, ?said Dr. Martin.

?While many health problems are complex and involve multiple factors, we know that ultraviolet light can cause skin cancer and avoiding excessive exposure is the solution,? said Elizabeth S. ?Yet, despite this knowledge, the number of skin cancer continues to increase every year.

Even more disheartening is the fact that teens continue to tan despite the known health risks.?
